Dive In and Enjoy The Adult Swim Festival

Adult Swims approach to entertainment is aptly described on Wikipedia as “experimental, risqué, unorthodox, crude, dry, and improvisational humor”; this brash and new approach to entertainment was the brain child of Mike Lazzo. And what a child it is; realizing the potential for increasing viewing in the off hours on Cartoon Network, Lazzo, went to work creating content for the ever-restless adult population. The first original series Space Ghost Coast to Coast debuted in 1994, well before the official launch of Adult Swim, September 2nd, 2001. They burst onto the late-night scene with a plethora of raunchy and unique shows like Sealab 2021, Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, Aqua Teen Hunger Force and The Brak Show. Fast forward 17 years and we are about to witness another first for the once obscure television block, Adult Swim Festival.

If you’ve never seen this warning I dare say you have been missing out on some of the most quirky and unique programming of the last 2 decades. And although the shows only run from 11pm-6am the festival offers you so much more. The preview Friday night, 4pm-11pm will have artist Open Mike Eagle and T-Pain performing at the reimagined historic district, Row DTLA, next to the heart of downtown LA. Saturday & Sunday offer a more extensive experience running from Noon-Midnight with non-stop musicians, artist, comedians, exhibits, merch and so much more.

Adult Swim has always hosted a variety of up and coming and well-established artist to complement their shows & commercials which adds to the unique programming experience that they provide.  For those unfamiliar with their unconventional ads check out this compilation from 2017:

DJ DOUGPOUND is a comedian, writer, editor, and musician. His work has been featured on a spread of television shows including Tim & Eric’s Awesome Show, Portlandia, and The Eric Andre Show. He combines his dry & goofy sense of humor with music to create what he refers to as “Joke DJ” sets that leave fan laughing with his nonsensical beats and off the cuff comedy.

Jena Friedman, the always hilarious and dark humor of Jena will be on display for all Sunday as one of the many comedy acts at the festival. She is best known for her standup career and her political satire which landed her a field producer spot on The Daily Show. Her smashing success with her acclaimed standup routine “American Cunt” has gotten her wonderfully dark humor out for all to enjoy. And now she will be gracing us all with an appearance Sunday night.

Rick & Morty Musical Ricksperience, yes you heard me right, composer Ryan Elder who does all the music for the tv hit Rick & Morty will have a full orchestra among other instruments to perform at Adult Swim Festival. Which leaves this curious writer saying, “SHOW ME WHAT YOU GOT”.

Run The Jewels, this is my must see for the weekend, having seen them 3 times already I can guarantee your eardrums are in for a treat. Killer Mike & The Real ELP never disappoint with hard hitting beats and brain twistingly clever lyricism these hip-hop icons will have you chanting RTJ all day.

Now if you aren’t sold on coming to the inaugural Adult Swim Festival I’m not sure what to say….ohhh wait, ya I do. There’s way more than what I mentioned here so go check out the website Adult Swim Festival. Whether you are looking for music, comedy, art, merchandise, or the Meatwad Dome 4D experience and the Hot Dog Ride there truly is something for everyone at Adult Swim Festival. So, come join us in LA October 5th-7th and get riggity riggity wrecked son!
