The Coathangers: A Live Recording at Alex's Bar featuring Hypnotized Chickens
THE COATHANGERS
Long Beach music scene is amplifying and Alex’s Bar is quickly becoming a hot spot for Southern Californians. The Coathangers hosted “Two Nights of Magic”, two back-to-back nights at Alex’s Bar that were recorded for a live album. Both nights consisted of talented acts, magic, and badassery.
One of the acts worth mentioning, is the wonderful and obscene magician by the name of “Christopher Fucking Wonder”, who went on before The Coathangers began their set. The only thing appropriate about his act was his shirt that had “shit show” stated largely on the front. The tricks he had up his sleeves included hypnotizing chickens, and piercing a sword through his hairless one-eyed dog, and pounding several beers throughout the whole performance. His grand finale consisted of him shooting a confetti gun from in between his legs while mooning the audience and tattooed on each of his butt cheeks were the words “the” and “end”. Although it was a bit lewd as far as magic acts go, this was the most entertaining and original punk rock magic shows, and likely the only punk rock magic show.
The Coathanger’s put on an energetic and intimate set for their fans. Known for being energetic and multi-talented, Minnie, Crook Kid, and Rusty all had a turn playing drums during this set.
The audience moshed and screamed along to mostly every word of every song. The crowd went insane as soon as they started playing “Squeeki Tiki”, a fan favorite track that calls for a squeak toy to be a musical instrument. They performed more favorites such as “Adderall”, “Follow Me”, and “Trailer Park Boneyard”. That live album is definitely something to get your claws on once it comes out as it will have a perfect mixture of tracks off their albums Nosebleed Weekend, Suck My Shirt, and Larceny & Old Lace. Once calling it a wrap of the set of night two, the Coathanger girls celebrated and continued to have a good night by taking photos and mingling with fans.
