Sarah Tells Us The Safe Word Through Her Music

Atlanta, Georgia's Sarah and the Safe Word recently ventured North into the frigid temps of a typical Connecticut winter and their set was anything but cold! The audience consisted predominantly of friends and family members of the two local bands that were also on the bill but vocalist Sarah Rose and her band won everyone over with their brand of music that is certainly rock & roll but influenced by jazz, swing, cabaret, and more. You can see why the band was asked to perform on the 2017 Van's Warped Tour's stop in Atlanta.

Formed in 2015, the band is a strong group of musicians who blend nicely. Kienan Dietrich's guitar work was solid and led the band through a host of interesting original songs whose lyrics were sometimes dark and introspective even when the melody was light and upbeat. Maddox Reksten (bass) and Sam Freeman (drums) held down the rhythm section in excellent fashion with Maddox being quite a showman to keep your eyes on. Keyboardist Beth Ballinger rounds out the band. While a number of their studio songs have strings, the strings are not missed on stage with Beth's contributions filling the lush and powerful delivery of those songs.

While most of the songs were original songs from their 2017 CD release, "Strange Doings In The Night" as well as their streaming releases, the show stealer was a truly inspired cover version of the Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)". Sarah's voice was soulful and powerful while the band was a wall of sound which accompanied but didn't overpower her vocals.

If you are not familiar with Sarah & The Safe Word, when the show starts, you wonder what you are hearing but you are curious. By the end of the show, you're a fan and you are wanting more. Their music is out on all of the major music streaming sites so if you can't pick up their CD, start streaming and become hooked on them!
