AFI Sells Out The Observatory Festival Grounds in Orange County for an Explosive Night
AFI brought their electrifying live show to a sold-out Observatory Festival Grounds in Santa Ana, California, on September 19th, delivering a career-spanning setlist, an unforgettable atmosphere, and a crowd united by their love for the legendary band. Orange County turned into AFI territory as fans packed The Observatory Festival Grounds for a highly anticipated night with one of music’s most enduring acts. With AFI shirts filling the crowd from the barricade to the back of the grounds, the sold-out show felt like a celebration of the band’s legacy and the generations of fans who have grown up with their music. From longtime devotees to newer listeners discovering the band’s darker, melodic sound, the audience arrived ready to sing along, celebrate their favorite songs, and experience AFI live.
Fans proudly wore their favorite AFI shirts, turning the grounds into a gathering place for a community connected by decades of music. The atmosphere reflected the loyalty AFI has cultivated throughout its career. Whether fans came for the explosive Punk roots, the atmospheric Goth-rock influences, or the anthemic choruses that made songs like “Miss Murder” and “Girl’s Not Grey” fan favorites, the excitement was unmistakable. With the show sold out, the packed grounds created the kind of energy that makes a major concert feel like a shared experience. Fans pressed toward the stage, waiting for the lights to drop and the opening notes to signal the beginning of AFI’s set. The band took the stage at approximately 9:30 p.m., unleashing a performance that balanced aggressive early material, beloved classics, and songs from their more recent releases.
AFI opened with “Strength Through Wounding,” immediately setting the tone for a set that moved across different eras of the band’s catalog. Frontman Davey Havok commanded the stage with his unmistakable presence, while guitarist Jade Puget, bassist Hunter Burgan, and drummer Adam Carson delivered the musical intensity that has defined AFI for decades. The setlist brought together material from landmark albums including Black Sails in the Sunset, The Art of Drowning, Sing the Sorrow, Decemberunderground, and Burials, alongside newer songs from Silver Bleeds the Black Sun. “Girl’s Not Grey,” “Love Like Winter,” and “Miss Murder” offered memorable moments for fans who have followed the band through its evolution. Meanwhile, tracks such as “Holy Visions,” “Behind the Clock,” “Marguerite,” and “Nooneunderground” highlighted the darker, more atmospheric direction of AFI’s newer material.
The crowd’s enthusiasm carried through the performance, with familiar choruses bringing fans together in a venue filled with voices and raised hands. Before “Beautiful Thieves,” Havok acknowledged that the performance marked the band's largest headline set since 2006, adding another milestone to an already memorable Southern California appearance.
The Orange County concert formed part of AFI's 2026 touring cycle supporting Silver Bleeds the Black Sun…, the band's 2025 album. The record continues AFI's evolution, embracing atmospheric textures and shadowy alternative-rock influences while maintaining the emotional intensity that has attracted fans across generations.
Following European dates, AFI continued their North American schedule with festival appearances and headline shows. Upcoming dates include performances in Cincinnati on October 17th, Toronto on October 19th, St. Louis on October 22nd, and Arizona dates on October 27th and 28th. The band is also scheduled to appear at Día de los Deftones in San Diego on November 7th.
