It’s All About the Journey (and the Destination!): A Road Trip to Mammoth Mountain

With the first day of spring having come and gone, and a blustery chill still swirling through the air, it’s the ideal time to break out your cozy scarf and hit the road.

Because nothing beats a car packed full of great snacks, the perfect playlist, and your favorite pair of skis, when it comes to making memories and embarking on the road trip of a lifetime with family and friends. And whether you’re a foodie, adventure seeker, or relaxation enthusiast, Mammoth Mountain is the destination spot you’ve been dreaming of.

Located slightly west of the quaint town of Mammoth Lakes, California, Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort sits within the Inyo National Forest of Madera and Mono Counties, and is approximately six hours from sunny San Diego.

But with quality stops located throughout the trek, you’ll want to make sure to save a little extra time for a few fun pit stops along the way.

For the foodie of the group, the drive up holds almost more excitement than the destination itself. Renowned for their baked pastries and specialty Sheepherder Bread, Schat’s Bakery is a local legend, with lines often bursting through the doors of the family-run operation. So whether you’re loading up on sweets or stopping in for a much deserved lunch break, Schat’s Bakery is a can’t-miss spot.

Also located along the drive, are areas that are sure to make your adventure loving friend jump with glee. Surrounded by cactus and an expansive desert, it’s hard not to picture yourself in the midst of an old-western movie. And what better way to compliment this action-packed-tale than with a plethora of old ghost-towns ready to be explored. Abandoned weathered buildings, playgrounds, and dinosaur statues, make for a great spot to jump out of the car, stretch your legs and take some killer photos to show off to all your friends and family back home.

Finally, for your relaxation-loving companion, the best activity is none other than chilling in the car and singing along to the perfect playlist. Obviously curated before the drive (because stress-free is the only way to travel), this collection includes tracks with just the right amount of spunk to energize the trip without too much effort involved. And while the drive up is an adventure within itself, Mammoth Mountain holds an entirely new set of activities waiting to be explored.

In addition skiing and snowboarding (an adventure seeker’s paradise), the mountain resort has a village perfect for those who who would rather stay in versus face the snow head on. With an entire row of top-notch restaurants offering everything from homemade pasta at Campo to chocolate fondue at Side Door Cafe, the village is packed with culinary delights ready to satisfy any food-lover’s dream. And with spas, shops, and a great view, there’s no shortage of ways to kick-back and relax in town.

So pack your bags and load up the car with family and friends, because Mammoth Mountain is calling your name!
