This past Saturday, Charleston Indie-rock band Stoplight Observations performed a headlining, sold-out concert at Charleston Music Hall. The lineup for the night also included two other local bands: Rare Creatures and SondorBlue. The venue quickly filled up and there was a large crowd front and center standing against the stage shortly after doors opened. Having three local bands headline a show at this beautiful venue, everyone knew it would be fantastic, but we were all blown away by the performances of these talented musicians.

When an artist chooses to write and perform under the moniker “The Sad Song Co.”, certain assumptions about the type of music the artist creates would be perfectly justified and, in this case, fairly accurate. The three albums that have been released since producer and multi-instrumentalist Nigel Powell’s solo project debuted fifteen years ago – miseryguts (2003), Poignant Device (2007), and in amber (2016) – have been explorations of the forlorn and wistful. But Powell sets aside despair for tentative hopefulness with The Sad Song Co.’s new release, Worth, due out February 9th.

Two nights and three great artists came together on one stage for an excellent cause at The Teragram Ballroom in Los Angeles, California. Shannon Lay, Ty Segall, and OCS all put on mellow performances that felt more like a private show than anything else. They combined forces to bring support to L.A. Kitchen’s mission in providing meals to the Los Angeles homeless. L.A. Kitchen not only focuses on feeding the city and ensuring that food never goes to waste, but also provides job training, volunteering, and strengthening the communities within Los Angeles. With both nights sold out, it was a successful and memorable event
On August 25, 2017, Hurricane Harvey made landfall with the Gulf Coast and began to wreak havoc across Texas with its torrential downpours, high winds, and resulting floods. One such city that was inundated by days of relentless rain was Houston. Within 48 hours, homes were under water, streets un-drivable, even un-walkable, and lives changed forever. Though it may appear that the city has already “rebuilt” itself, with downtown commuters back in their normal office routines, restaurants open and serving happy patrons, and some lives tuned back into normalcy, the reality is that many Houstonians are still suffering nearly four months after the horrendous natural disaster and the city has a long way to regaining normalcy for all of its citizens.
During December, of Montreal performed in various cities during their Florida tour such as Gainesville, Tampa, Orlando, and West Palm Beach. The band also performed the anticipated music festival Day for Night in Houston, Texas which was headlined by Nine Inch Nails and Thom Yorke. For the tenth anniversary of "Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?" a deluxe vinyl was released to commemorate the album.

The night saw him highlight tracks that spanned all four decades of his career, but as each song bled seamlessly into the next with only the briefest pause in between, it felt as if they were meant to be played in that precise order. Combining the pulsing, electronic beats with stark, frenetic lighting, the atmosphere began to feel like a rave, an intoxicating, irresistible opportunity to become completely absorbed by the music, a feeling from which the band wasn't exempt.
The influential Icelandic pop artist Björk alas made her Florida debut, performing a DJ set as part of an Art Basel event at Mana Wynwood. Organized by iii Points, the show also featured acclaimed experimental electronic DJ/producer Oneohtrix Point Never as the closing act.
