New Order celebrate their key to the city of Miami Beach at sold-out show

On January 12th, dance-rock pioneers New Order were warmly welcomed back to the iconic Jackie Gleason Theater also known as the Fillmore Miami Beach at a sold-out concert following their last show at the venue in 2016.

And the theater felt like it was made for the band, whose slick synth-driven songs perfectly suited the theater. The crowd, all on their feet even way back in the mezzanine, danced the night away to some of their classic hits like “The Perfect Kiss” and “Bizarre Love Triangle” as well as the smashing “Tutti Frutti” from their latest album, 2015’s Music Complete.

The show was one in ten of a short world tour they are taking on this year, most of it being in Europe, further proving their loyalty to their massive following in South Florida. Its date also nearly coincided with the 20th anniversary of their cult album Technique, released on Jan 30, 1989

Singer Bernard Sumner repeatedly expressed his wonder at the crowd’s enthusiasm, noting that Miami was always a great place for them to play at. He then shared an announcement with them: the band was granted the key to the city of Miami Beach for their impact on its culture.

And there is something about New Order that feels quintessentially Miami, despite the English band’s background. The twinkling sound of their music resonates with its Art Deco structures across the beach and its 80’s Miami Vice neon nostalgia.

After two hours of music, the band wrapped up with a well-demanded encore, dedicating their final songs to the late Ian Curtis, frontman of the band’s former incarnation, Joy Division. But the last thing Sumner shared with the crowd was a faithful promise, which he kept the last time he gave it at their 2016 show:

“We will be back,” he reassured.
