Pixies perform 'Bossanova' and 'Trompe Le Monde' at the Hollywood Palladium

Not many bands can sell out two consecutive tour dates at the Hollywood Palladium but the Pixies are certainly one of them. On Friday, June 20th, the first of two nights in which the group played their early 90s’ albums 'Bossanova' and 'Trompe Le Monde' in their entirety. Opener, Kurt Vile, set the tone for the main act, as he performed hit tracks such as, 'Pretty Pimpin' and 'Like Exploding Stones,’ for the indie kids and their parents.

Let's be honest, Pixies are Indie royalty - since their inception in Boston, Massachusetts in 1988. Lead singer, Black Francis, and the band have been massively influential across the spectrum of Alternative music. Their aesthetic sound of quiet interludes and then screechy choruses was an influence on Grunge music which frequently utilizes similar structures. Their musical tracks also play well on the festival circuit, where the Pixies have honed their craft. The group, Radiohead, also often cite the Pixies as a big influence, potentially after seeing them perform live at the Reading Festival around 1990. The Pixies are revered in the United Kingdom and Europe.

The Pixies performed various songs from 'Bossanova' which was released in 1990. The audience sang along to the words of the songs. Francis did not lose his intensity and kept the momentum going throughout the whole set. The Pixies line-up consist of band members: Black Francis, lead vocalist, Joey Santiago on guitar, David Lovering on drums, and Emma Richardson on bass, which Richardson is originally from the group, the Band of Skulls. The bass is a key component of the Pixies’ sound as the sound plays an important structural part in their songs.

For the second half of the concert, the Pixies performed songs such as ‘Planet of Sound and ‘The Sad Punk’ from their album, 'Trompe Le Monde,' released in 1991. The audience thoroughly enjoyed the Pixies’ performing their albums in their entirety. It was reminiscent of pre-Spotify days when music fans purchased physical music records and listened to the albums as a unique art form. Due to current streaming platforms, it's easy to skip through tracks, in a quest for instant gratification. Pixies’ fans appreciated the artistry of the group, who still stand like a notable colossus over the Indie music scene. The Pixies ended their concert with a grand finale and performed their iconic track, 'Where Is My Mind'.
