Wallows' 'Model & More' Tour at Raleigh’s Red Hat Amphitheater

On June 11th, Wallows brought their ‘Model & More’ Tour to the Red Hat Amphitheater in Raleigh, North Carolina. Fans came in from all over—from California, Oregon, Florida, and beyond—and some lined up as early as 4am the day of the show to secure their spots along the barricade. By the time the show started, the crowd had filled in with a mix of longtime fans and people seeing the band live for the first time.

Wallows consist of band members: Dylan Minnette, Braeden Lemasters, and Cole Preston. They are known for their Indie Rock hits such as “Are You Bored Yet?,” “Scrawny,” “Remember When,” and “Calling After Me.” The band changes their setlist nightly, and in Raleigh they opened with the track, “Your Apartment,” a track from their latest album, ‘Model.’

One of the things that separates Wallows from other artists is how tight-knit the community is. Their fans are all so welcoming and engaging. The band is very interactive withthe crowd, involving them in so many special moments throughout the show.

One of the most interactive moments of the show was when Dylan Minnette stepped into the crowd to choose fans to sing the bridge of their fan-favorite hit, “OK.” At the Raleigh show, he picked two who had flown all the way from California, that had a sign that read, “Did we just fly 2,379 to get OK’d?!! OK.”

About halfway through the set, the band switched things up. Cole Preston stepped out from behind the drums to sing “Quarterback,” while Dylan took over on drums. It is typical for Wallows to rotate vocals throughout the set, because all three members have songs that they lead. These moments are just part of what makes their shows so collaborative and fun. Each of them brings a different feel to their songs and keeps the energy high.

The show had a balance of new songs and older ones. Some of the highlights of the show were “These Days,” a live rendition that is very different from the recorded version, “Coffin Change,” from their new EP, ‘More,’ and ‘Pleaser,’ their debut single.

The ‘Wallows’ experience would not be complete without their touring band, Blake Morell, Kevin Grimmett, and Danny Ferenbach. These multi-talented musicians add so much to the live sound and bring everything together.

They ended the night with their track, “Are You Bored Yet?,” which had the entire crowd singing along. It is their biggest song, and even though the crowd knew it was coming, it hits different live. As always, they had the audience sing Clairo’s verse, and every voice in the amphitheater joined in.

Overall, Wallows created an unforgettable experience for the packed Raleigh crowd. The United States leg of the ‘Model & More’ Tour is almost over, but the band will be doing a festival run, and opening for My Chemical Romance in Los Angeles, before continuing their tour for a European leg.
