New York trio Sunflower Bean returns with Sophomore Album Twentytwo in Blue

Sunflower Bean is a New York alternative trio with post-punk influences and psychedelia. The band was Founded Nick Kivlen and Jacob Faber. The name comes from Kivlen’s sunflower seeds obsessions and Fabor's love for coffee. The two later decided to add Julia Cumming to their lineup as lead singer and bass player.

Even though the band has been active since 2013, they waited till 2016 to release their first album under Fat Possum Records named Human Ceremony. One of the highlights of this album is how the band manages to change styles from song to song effectively.  An interesting thing about this album is the call and response from Kivlen and Cumming’s vocals. The lyrics in this album are of angst and existential themes viewed from a teenage perspective.

On the band’s second album, TwentyTwo In Blue they come back with a more polished sound.

The album was released in 2018 and this time released with Mom + Pop Music. The band shifted from the heavier psychedelic sound of their first album to something more reminiscent of oldies rock paying dues to bands such as Fleetwood Mac while still maintaining some of the qualities of their debut album.

If psychedelic rock, energetic shows, and the occasional mosh pit are your thing be sure to check out the band live while they are currently touring their latest album with dates in the United States as well as in England.
